Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the task by reporting on the main activities shown in the graph, specifically identifying the film club, table tennis, and amateur dramatics. An overview is attempted in the conclusion, noting the general popularity of the film club and the decline of amateur dramatics. However, the response lacks a clear, cohesive overall summary paragraph early in the text, and some data descriptions are imprecise (e.g., describing the film club numbers vaguely as 'between 65-60'). Furthermore, martial arts and musical performances are largely neglected after the initial introduction. While the key trends are touched upon, the lack of full data integration and underdeveloped comparison place this response at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is organized into basic paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by body sentences, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by choppy sentence structures and repetitive transitional phrases such as 'Firstly' and 'Further'. Cohesive devices are mechanically applied and referencing is at times unclear (e.g., 'If we talk about a subject in which participants have decreased so it will be amateur dramatics'). Paragraphing is initiated but lacks internal cohesion to guide the reader smoothly through the comparative data. These issues align with a Band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate vocabulary to describe general trends, employing words such as 'participants', 'increased', 'decreased', and 'participation'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, inappropriate word choices, and informal phrasing such as 'took drastic change', 'faced downfall', and 'pridicts' (predicts). Spelling errors like 'fromm' and typographical issues with spacing (e.g., 'Melbourne,Australia') also detract from the quality. The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, which restricts the lexical score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures frequently result in grammatical errors. Examples include 'most participants are in film club through out these twenty years which is between 65-60 and rising again' and 'If we talk about a subject in which participants have decreased so it will be amateur dramatics.' Punctuation and spacing errors are frequent, and missing articles or prepositions cause occasional difficulty for the reader. Control over grammar is inconsistent, supporting a Band 5.0.
