Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully reports the main features of the line graph, providing a clear overview in the introduction that identifies the most popular activity and general trends. Key data points are cited, such as the film club remaining the most popular, table tennis increasing significantly, and the decline of amateur dramatics. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in the data reporting, such as stating martial arts reached '46' in 2015 (whereas the chart shows around 34) and misquoting the 2020 figure for amateur dramatics as 3 instead of approximately 6. Furthermore, the overview mentions musical performances increasing, but misses a broader synthesis of how all categories shifted. Despite these minor discrepancies and calculation slips, all parts of the task are addressed with relevant data selection.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall progression and is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Whereas'. However, some of the referencing and sentence links feel a bit mechanical or awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'Whereas, a dramatic increase...' which creates a sentence fragment. Paragraphing is adequate, but within paragraphs, the flow is occasionally disrupted by slightly clunky transitions between data points. Overall, the organizational structure is coherent and easy to follow, supporting a clear reading of the visual data.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'fluctuating', 'dramatically increased', and 'surpassing'. However, there are a few lexical errors and spelling mistakes, notably 'actvity' instead of 'activity'. Word choice is sometimes slightly imprecise or unnatural, such as 'musical performances participation' instead of 'participation in musical performances'. Additionally, repetition of verbs like 'increased' and 'decreased' limits lexical variety. Nevertheless, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the main trends and comparisons, and errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'while amateur dramatics that started with 28 people in 2000 experienced an increase...'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as missing articles ('with number of participants') and a sentence fragment ('In contrast to the decline in participation rate of amateur dramatics.'). Furthermore, tense consistency is occasionally unsteady when shifting between past years and general states. Despite these errors, the majority of simple sentences are error-free and complex structures are attempted without severely impeding meaning.
