Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task well by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. The introduction accurately states what the graph shows, and key trends are identified, such as the film club consistently having the highest participation and musical performances starting at zero. However, there are some imprecise descriptions of data, such as stating that table tennis and amateur dramatics both had 20 participants in 2010 (amateur dramatics was actually at 20, but table tennis was also around 20, which is accurate; however, saying 'more than 15 people joined for table tennis and above of 25 performers attended amateur dramatics' in 2000 is slightly imprecise compared to the exact gridline figures of 16 and 26). Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of Task Achievement adequately, earning a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into three paragraphs: an introduction with general trends, a body paragraph discussing table tennis, amateur dramatics, and martial arts, and a final paragraph covering musical performances and the film club. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'On the other hand', 'In 2000', 'Gradually', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes mechanical, and there are awkward transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas could be structured more logically. This corresponds to a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items related to data reporting such as 'participants', 'performers', 'activity', 'steadily raised', and 'steady number'. However, there are several spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'amature' instead of 'amateur', 'muscical' instead of 'musical', 'cllub' instead of 'club', 'in reached' instead of 'reached', and 'onlu' instead of 'only'. Additionally, the phrase 'raised' is used incorrectly where 'rose' is required. These lexical errors do not impede communication, placing the response at a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory prepositional phrases ('In 2000, ...') and subordinate clauses ('however noticeably the number of performers for amature dramatics lowered less than 10'). There are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'demonstrates number of participants' (missing article), 'the number of participants in reached to mre than' (incorrect preposition and spelling), 'lowered less than 10' (incorrect verb choice), and 'remain in a moderate pace'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips occur frequently. This performance aligns with a Band 5.5.
