Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response presents an overview of the main trends and attempts to report key features from the line graph, such as the stability of the film club and martial arts, alongside the contrasting trajectories of table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, the essay is incomplete and ends abruptly mid-sentence ("making it the"). Furthermore, there are disjointed notes included near the beginning of the text, and some data points lack precision or full development. Because the response is unfinished and contains structural disorganization, it aligns best with Band 5.0 descriptors, where the task is addressed only partially and ideas are left underdeveloped.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response features an initial attempt at paragraphing, but it includes isolated, fragmented notes near the top that disrupt the logical flow. Cohesive devices are used in the body paragraphs (such as "Overall", "Futhermore", and "Lastly"), but referencing and paragraph structure break down significantly as the text proceeds. Additionally, the essay terminates abruptly, preventing any sense of logical conclusion. These organizational flaws and mechanical cohesion errors place the response firmly in the Band 5 range, characterized by some overall organisation but a lack of clear progression throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to discuss trends, employing terms like "popularity", "dramatically", "steep decline", and "gradual increase". However, there are numerous spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, including "center" (centre), "Futhermore" (Furthermore), "amater" (amateur), "musicial" (musical), "activties" (activities), "Fuurthermore" (Furthermore), and "seeen" (seen). Furthermore, the inclusion of rough notes with truncated words limits the precision of vocabulary use. These errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, matching the Band 5 descriptor where noticeable lexical errors are present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as "film club and martial arts have remained steady in terms of popularity, with film club having participants between 60 and 70..." However, grammatical accuracy is compromised by recurring punctuation and phrasing issues, missing articles, and the incomplete final sentence. There are also typographical errors and tense inconsistencies in places. While simple sentences are generally understandable, the frequency of errors and the unfinished nature of the essay restrict the score to Band 5.0, reflecting limited control over complex forms and frequent errors.
