Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the provided line graph. An overview is included, highlighting the main contrast between the growing popularity of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics, alongside the trends of other activities. Key data points are cited, such as table tennis starting with under 20 people and reaching over 50 by 2020, and film club maintaining high numbers around 60. While there are some minor numerical inaccuracies (e.g., stating amateur dramatics had 25 people in 2005 when the gridline is closer to 28, and missing capitalisation on proper nouns), the response provides a well-developed and clear summary of the visual data. This aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview paragraph, and concluding with detailed body paragraphs grouping the activities. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas and signal contrasts, such as "Overall", "Whereas", and "Although". However, some referencing is slightly mechanical and paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with very short single-sentence paragraphs at the end that could be better integrated. Logical progression is maintained throughout, ensuring the reader easily follows the comparisons between activities. This performance fits the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, comfortably earning a Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for task 1, employing functional terms such as "participating", "popularity", "decline", and "plateud". There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like "rapid decline" and "sharply". However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as "staedy" instead of steady, "plateud" instead of plateaued, and "alot" instead of a lot. Furthermore, there are missed capitalisations for proper nouns like "melbourne, australia". These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses introduced by "while", "whereas", and "although". Grammatical control is fairly good, but there are several recurring errors, such as missing articles ("illustrates number of individuals", "saw decreasing amount") and run-on structures or punctuation lapses in sentences like "Starting with the amateur dramatics which had around 25 people in 2005 saw a rapid decline and the number went to falling under 10 individuals..." Despite these errors, meaning remains clear, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
