Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate provides a clear overview and successfully identifies the main trends, such as the sustained popularity of the film club and the dramatic rise in table tennis participation. Key data points are reported accurately, such as the film club starting at around 64 and table tennis rising significantly to around 60 by 2020. Comparisons are made effectively between different activities, particularly highlighting the contrasting fortunes of amateur dramatics and table tennis. All parts of the prompt are addressed well, though a minor data misinterpretation occurs regarding musical performances where the writer states 'almost none participants were recorded, however, until 2005 there were almost no participants', which is slightly repetitive and confused about the initial zero values. Overall, the task is well handled, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. The essay is broken down into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Meanwhile', 'Although', and 'On contrary'. However, paragraphing is somewhat irregular, as the second paragraph starts immediately without proper spacing from the introduction, and there are occasional mechanical cohesive linkages. Referencing is generally clear, though the transition between sentences in the second body paragraph feels slightly abrupt. These minor mechanical issues place the essay securely at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing less common items and phrases like 'dramatic increase', 'sharp decline', and 'stable through out the period'. There are, however, several lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'Filmclub' (spelled as one word), 'begginning' (spelling error), 'almost none participants' (incorrect quantifier usage), and 'most like activity' (likely meant 'most liked' or 'popular'). Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main trends of the graph, supporting a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinate clauses effectively with conjunctions like 'although' and 'while'. There are, nevertheless, several grammatical and punctuation errors present. For instance, there is a run-on or comma splice issue in the second paragraph ('participating, However, there was...'), a spelling error in 'begginning', and missing prepositions or incorrect word forms ('almost none participants'). Punctuation around transitional phrases is also occasionally faulty. While complex structures are attempted and often accurate, the frequency of these grammatical slips prevents the score from rising above Band 6.0.
