Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the provided line graph. The overview successfully captures the main contrast between the rising popularity of table tennis and musical performances versus the decline in amateur dramatics, as well as the relative stability of the film club and martial arts. Key data points are cited accurately overall, such as table tennis starting with under 20 people and reaching over 50, and amateur dramatics dropping significantly. There are minor inaccuracies in dates or numbers (e.g., stating amateur dramatics had 25 people in 2005 when the graph shows around 28), but these do not detract from the overall adequate coverage and clear selection of features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview paragraph, and then body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Starting with', 'Whereas', and 'Although'. However, there are some minor cohesive and referencing issues, such as the incomplete introductory clause 'Starting with the amateur dramatics which had around 25 people in 2005 saw a rapid decline', which disrupts the smooth flow of the sentence. Paragraphing is appropriately handled, but the progression could be slightly tighter.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including terms like 'participating', 'popularity', 'decline', and 'plateud' (spelled 'plateud' instead of 'plateaued'). There are attempts to use less common vocabulary ('gained popularity', 'sharply close'), but word choice and collocation are occasionally awkward, such as 'decreasing amount of interest' instead of 'decreasing level of interest'. Spelling and word formation errors are present ('staedy', 'plateud', 'alot'), but they do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as subordinate clauses ('while the amateur dramatics club saw...', 'Although, it did plateud...'). However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as missing articles ('illustrates number of individuals') and dangling modifiers ('Starting with the amateur dramatics which had around 25 people in 2005 saw a rapid decline'). Punctuation is sometimes weak, and capitalisation is missing for proper nouns like 'melbourne, australia'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains mostly clear.
