The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

 

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants in five different activities, including film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances, at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, participation in table tennis and musical performances increased considerably over the period, while amateur dramatics experienced a significant decline. In contrast, the figures for the film club and martial arts remained relatively stable despite some fluctuations.

Looking first at the activities that experienced growth, participation in table tennis increased dramatically throughout the period. In 2000, approximately 15 people participated in this activity, and this figure remained unchanged until 2010. However, it then rose sharply to around 35 in 2015 before reaching the highest point of about 54 participants in 2020. Similarly, musical performances, which had no participants in 2000 and 2005, became more popular over the following years. The number of participants climbed to approximately 12 in 2010 and continued increasing gradually to nearly 18 by 2020.

The film club was the most popular activity throughout the period, although participation fluctuated slightly. It started at around 64 participants in 2000, fell gradually to 60 in 2010, before recovering to approximately 66 by 2020. A similar pattern can be seen in martial arts, where the number of participants varied between about 32 and 37, ending at the same level as it began. Meanwhile, amateur dramatics experienced a significant decline. After increasing slightly from 25 to 28 participants between 2000 and 2005, the figure dropped steadily and reached only around 6 participants in 2020.
