IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The graph provides information regarding number of participants who took part in several activities at social center in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020. The events include film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performance.
Overall, film club was most popular activity among the people throughout, while table tennis and musical performance grew markedly. Amateur dramatic decline sharply. Martial arts remained fairly stable.
The film club, consistently had highest number of participants, starting at around 60 and slightly increasing at 65 by 2020. Meanwhile, martial art fluctuated within a narrow range of roughly 32 and 38 participants, ending at 36, the same figure as at the start.
In addition, table tennis showed the most dramatic growth, starting at 16, rising to 20 by 2005 and remaining level until 2010, before climb steeply to 54 by 2020, overtaking martial art along the way. Moreover, musical performance had no participant in the first of five years, then numbers rose to 12 by 2010 and reached about 18 by 2020.
In contrast, amateur dramatics began at 26, rose slightly to 28 in 2005, then dropped sharply to just 6 in 2020, indicating the lower figure of any activities, at the end of period.
