Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of the five activities over the twenty-year period. An overview is provided, highlighting the film club's dominance and the significant changes in table tennis and amateur dramatics. Key data points are cited, such as the film club starting around 64 and reaching 66, and table tennis rising sharply to 54. However, there are minor inaccuracies in some reported figures when compared to the visual data, and the response trails off abruptly at the end with an incomplete sentence ('Whereas, martial arts started in 2005 and reached about 10 inn'). This prevents the response from achieving a higher band score due to incomplete development at the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to different data groups. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, using transition markers such as 'Overall', 'To commence with', 'On the other hand', and 'Similarly'. Paragraphing is used logically to separate different trends. However, referencing is occasionally problematic, and the abrupt ending of the text disrupts the logical progression and cohesion of the final section. Overall, the logical flow is mostly maintained despite the structural truncation at the very end.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a Task 1 response, successfully attempting less common and functional phrases such as 'gradual increase', 'fluctuations', 'dramatic decline', and 'sharp rise'. Word choices are generally appropriate for describing statistical trends ('outnumbered', 'overtook'). There are some minor lexical inaccuracies and typos, such as 'performace' instead of 'performance' and 'throught' instead of 'throughout'. Despite these slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main trends clearly to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers effectively (e.g., 'The line graph demonstrates the data about how many individuals participated...'). There are control issues with grammar, evidenced by minor preposition and article errors ('demonstrates the data about'), and the sentence structure breaks down entirely at the final incomplete sentence ('Whereas, martial arts started in 2005 and reached about 10 inn'). Nevertheless, many sentences remain grammatically sound and do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the band 6 category.
