Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all the main trends shown in the line graph, including the dominant position of the film club, the breakthrough in table tennis, and the notable decline in amateur dramatics. The candidate successfully identifies overview trends and provides specific figures for different years, such as the rise in table tennis from 15 to 50 and the drop in amateur dramatics. However, there are minor inaccuracies in data reporting (for instance, stating that martial arts fluctuated from 200 to 2020 instead of 2000, and slight misreadings of the exact figures). Despite these minor flaws, the task is addressed well, aligning closely with Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview paragraph, and subsequent body paragraphs dedicated to individual activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'however', and 'even though' are used to structure the information, although referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical ('Martial arts has fluctuated...', 'Amateur dramatics was...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each trend, ensuring an overall coherent arrangement that allows the reader to follow the progression easily.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts at less common lexical items such as 'breakthrough', 'remarcable fall' (spelled 'remarcable'), 'proportion', and 'fluctuated'. However, there are several lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'involvers' instead of 'participants', 'personne' instead of 'personnel' or 'people', and spelling mistakes ('remarcable', 'approximatelly'). The range is sufficient to convey the main features of the chart, but errors in word formation and spelling prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'even though its raise begun from 2005 that means there was not any participant...'). There are, however, frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the film club is the most activity contains'), tense inconsistencies ('has considered a big decline'), and run-on sentences or comma splices. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the score to Band 6.0.
