Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the overall trends such as the film club remaining the most popular, table tennis growing, and amateur dramatics declining. Key data points are cited correctly, such as table tennis rising sharply to over 50 participants by 2020. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in citing exact initial data points for certain years compared to the source graph (e.g., stating film club started at 66 in 2000 when the graph shows around 64). Nevertheless, the response covers all required aspects and provides a well-rounded summary of the visual data, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introduction and an overview paragraph, followed by well-structured body paragraphs discussing individual categories (film club, martial arts, table tennis, amateur dramatics, and musical performances). Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', 'After that', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each category or grouping given sufficient focus. While referencing and linking are generally clear and functional, the transitions between sentences could sometimes be smoother to reach a higher band, placing this firmly at Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, successfully employing terms like 'fluctuated', 'continous growth', 'declined significantly', and 'upward trend'. There are, however, several spelling errors ('ilustrates', 'remined', 'papular', 'continous', 'dramatice', 'contast') and occasional minor word-form or collocation issues ('reached at 68'). Despite these lexical slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning and describe the graphical trends clearly. This performance meets the criteria for Band 6, where an adequate range is shown alongside noticeable spelling mistakes that do not impede overall communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms to report the data, such as 'While amateur dramatice declined significantly' and 'After rising from 27 to 29 participants between 2000 to 2005, the number fell sharply'. There are several grammatical and mechanical errors present, including preposition misuse ('reached at 68') and tense inconsistencies. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the core message remains clear throughout. The control of grammar aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor, featuring a combination of straightforward and more ambitious structures alongside recurring errors in punctuation and grammar.
