The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph below illustrates information on the numbers of participants for four activities, namely Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis, and Musical performances at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 to 2020.
Overall, Film club was the most popular activity throughout the period, while the Martial arts remained steady. However, the Table tennis saw a substantial growth in popularity.
In 2000, the Film club had attracted the largest number of participants, at 64. The figure underwent minor fluctuations, hit a low of 60 in 2010 and then recovered to 65 by the end of period, in 2020. The Martial arts observed the same pattern, started at 36. It was followed by a slight dip to 31 in 2005, and then peaked at 37 in 2010 before falling again to 33 in 2015 and recovering to 36 in 2020.
However, the Table tennis initiated with only 17 participants, which increased to 20 in 2010, and then surged to 54 in 2020. The Table tennis ranked the second most popular activity by the end of the period. In contrast, Amateur dramatics saw a marginal rise from 26 to 28 between 2000 and 2005. The numbers steadily decreased afterwards, ended as the least famous activity, recording only 5 participants in 2020. Nevertheless, the Musical performaces had zero followers over the first half decade. Later, the figure showed a steady rise and ended with 20 active participants in 2020.
