Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully identifies the visual aid as a line graph (despite incorrectly calling it a pie chart in the opening sentence) and covers all the main features and trends of the data. An overview is present, highlighting the film club's enduring popularity, the significant rise in table tennis, and the sharp decline in amateur dramatics. Key data points, such as the initial and final figures for various activities, are reported accurately. However, there are minor typos in the numbers (e.g., "60 four" instead of 64), but these do not obscure the overall reporting of information. The response satisfies the requirements well, though precision in data transcription could be slightly improved.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text is logically organised into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices such as "Overall", "In contrast", and "Regarding the other activities" are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is logical and appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. However, referencing and progression are occasionally hindered by typographical errors and awkward transitions, such as "before, before increasing sharply" and punctuation errors within sentences, which slightly disrupts the flow of reading.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like "declined slightly", "fluctuated", "increased marginally", and "rose sharply". However, there are notable lexical and spelling errors that detract from the overall quality, such as writing "material art" instead of "martial arts", "fall" instead of "fell", and confusing numbers with letters ("212" instead of "to 12"). Despite these errors, the message remains understandable. To achieve a higher band, the student needs greater accuracy in word choice and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting time clauses and comparative phrases (e.g., "while table tennis showed the most significant increase"). However, control over grammar and mechanics is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical and mechanical errors, including incorrect capitalization ("The The"), preposition errors ("add social center Melbourne" instead of "at a social centre in Melbourne"), tense inconsistencies, and typographical errors like "26th in 2028 in 2005". These errors occasionally require the reader to re-read sections, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 territory for grammar and accuracy.
