Student answer (Band 6.5)
This line graph illustrates the changes in the number of people participating in five different activities of a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, over a twenty-year period from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is clear that film club was consistently the most popular activity throughout the entire period while table tennis experienced the most dramatic growth. Conversely, Amateur dramatics was only activity that witnessed a significant, downward trend.
Looking at the details, film club attendance fluctuated slightly but remained high, starting at the roughly 64 participants in 2000 and ending at the peak of nearly 66 in 2020. Table tennis started as one of the popular activities with only about 16 participants, but its numbers experienced a sharp increase, climbing exponentially after 2010 to reach 54 by the end of the period. Musical performances did not exist for the 5 years but grew steadily from 2005 onward, reaching just under 20 participants in 2020.
In stark contrast, the number of people doing Martial arts remained relatively stable, hovering around 35 participants over the two decades despite minor fluctuations. Meanwhile Ameateur dramatics showed an initial marginal rise to about 28 participants in 2005, but subsequantly, plunged over the next 15 years, climbing to a low of roughly 7 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and making clear comparisons across the five activities shown in the graph. An effective overview is provided, highlighting the dominant position of the film club, the dramatic growth of table tennis, and the downward trajectory of amateur dramatics. Key data points are accurately cited to support the descriptions, such as the peak of film club participation and the exponential increase in table tennis up to 2020. Minor inaccuracies in reading specific figures, such as stating table tennis started with about 16 participants when it was around that mark, do not detract from the overall accurate representation of the visual data. The response meets all requirements for a Band 7 level in Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by detailed body paragraphs that group related trends effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Conversely', and 'In stark contrast' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data comparisons. Paragraphing is logical, with each paragraph serving a distinct function in the report. Although referencing is generally clear, occasional slight awkwardness in paragraph transitions prevents the response from reaching a higher band, but overall arrangement and cohesion are well managed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, employing less common lexical items such as 'fluctuated', 'exponentially', 'hovering', and 'plunged'. There is an awareness of collocation and style appropriate for an academic report. However, there are a couple of minor vocabulary slips, notably 'climbing to a low of roughly 7 participants' where 'declining' or 'dropping' would be more precise, and the spelling error 'Ameateur' in the final paragraph. These minor errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 7 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The student uses a variety of complex sentence structures effectively, including participial phrases and subordinate clauses, as seen in 'starting at the roughly 64 participants in 2000 and ending at the peak'. There are frequent error-free sentences, and grammatical control is generally strong. A few minor errors occur, such as the unnecessary article 'the roughly 64' and a slight contradiction in the final sentence ('plunged... climbing to a low'). Punctuation is accurate throughout, and overall structural flexibility supports a clear, fluent reading experience, warranting a Band 7.
