Student answer (Band 7.5)

This line graph illustrates the changes in the number of people participating in five different activities of a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, over a twenty-year period from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is clear that film club was consistently the most popular activity throughout the entire period while table tennis experienced the most dramatic growth. Conversely, Amateur dramatics was only activity that witnessed a significant downward trend.

Looking at the details, film club attendance fluctuated slightly but remained high, starting at roughly 64 participants in 2000 and ending at the peak of nearly 66 in 2020. Table tennis started as one of the most popular activities with only about 16 participants, but its numbers experienced a sharp increase, climbing exponentially after 2010 to reach 54 by the end of the period. Musical performances did not exist for the 5 years but grew steadily from 2005 onward, reaching just under 20 participants in 2020.

In stark contrast, the number of people doing martial arts remained relatively stable, hovering around 35 participants over the two decades despite minor fluctuations. Meanwhile Amateur dramatics showed an initial marginal rise to about 28 participants in 2005, but subsequantly, plunged over the next 15 years, climbing to a low of roughly 7 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and key comparisons from the line graph. An effective overview is provided in the second paragraph, correctly identifying the overall highest participation (film club), the most dramatic growth (table tennis), and the notable downward trend (amateur dramatics). The specific data points cited throughout the body paragraphs, such as starting and ending values for the film club and table tennis, are accurate and supported by the visual data. The student appropriately selects and groups relevant information without getting bogged down in unnecessary figures, fully meeting the requirements for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Ideas are effectively grouped by activity types and trends across paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Conversely', 'Looking at the details', and 'In stark contrast' are used naturally and appropriately to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is handled well, separating the introduction, overview, and detailed body sections logically. Referential cohesion is generally strong, though a minor slip occurs in the final sentence where the student writes 'climbing to a low', which is semantically contradictory. Overall, cohesion is well managed throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a wide and flexible range of vocabulary suited to academic report writing, successfully employing terms such as 'fluctuated', 'exponentially', 'marginal rise', and 'plunged'. Less common lexical items are used with good awareness of collocation and style. There is one notable lexical/semantic error in the final paragraph: the student uses the phrase 'climbing to a low', which is a contradiction in terms (should be 'dropping' or 'falling to a low'). Apart from this occasional slip and a minor spelling error ('subsequantly'), the vocabulary is precise and effectively conveys the trends shown in the graph.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

A wide variety of complex structures is used throughout the response, including participial phrases and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'starting at roughly 64 participants in 2000 and ending at the peak...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is generally strong. Punctuation is accurate, and verb tenses are handled correctly to reflect past trends over the specified twenty-year timeframe. Minor errors are very occasional, such as the missing article in 'Amateur dramatics was only activity' and a spelling typo in 'subsequantly', but these do not impede communication and allow the writing to comfortably achieve a high band score.
