Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph. An overview is provided, noting the main trends such as the drop in Amateur dramatics and the sharp increase in table tennis, alongside the Film club's sustained high numbers. However, there are numerous data inaccuracies throughout the body paragraphs when compared to the visual data. For instance, the student states the Film club started at 64% in 2002 instead of 2000, and invents percentages instead of absolute numbers. Additionally, some specific figures misalign with the graph data, such as table tennis reaching 55% in 2020 instead of approximately 54, and various other timeline errors. These factual discrepancies and reliance on imprecise data reporting limit the score to Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'wheras', 'Despite', 'while', and 'In addition'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, and sentence structures within the body paragraphs are disjointed. Paragraphing is present, but logical progression within paragraphs is disrupted by erratic sentence connections and punctuation errors. For example, sentences run together awkwardly with missing capitalisation or misplaced commas. Overall arrangement is somewhat coherent, but cohesion is hindered by poor execution, aligning with Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'fluctuated', 'considerable increase', and 'notiecable drop'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'wheras', 'teniss', 'graduallyat', 'particants', 'notiecable', 'tabble', 'shouw', and 'participats'. Furthermore, the student incorrectly uses percentage signs ('%') when the chart measures absolute numbers of participants. These lexical and mechanical errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses using 'while' and 'although'. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in tense consistency, prepositions, and sentence boundaries. Examples include 'Despite film club has fluctuated over the period though it has...', 'at 2015 has a slight increase', and 'musical performance shouw 0 participats in 200 from 2005 it show 10% particiants following in 2020 it increase considerably'. Punctuation is also poorly handled, with missing spaces and incorrect comma splices. These frequent errors restrict the grammatical score to Band 5.0.
