Student answer (Band 5.0)

This line graph reveals the data on number of participants for several activities at one social centre in two different countries Melbourne and Australia for the year 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the participants of film club remained almost same but have a slight fluctuation. Whereas, table tennis is the only participant who dramtically surged by the period. Comparitively, martial arts and other participants have fluctuations.

Film club had a slight decrease by the year 2020 but then rised a bit by the period of 2020. Unlike film arts, martial arts steadly fluctuated from 2010 to 2020. Amateur dramatics and table tennis cross connected in 2010 but after this period members of table tennis significantly rose till 2020. Conversly, participants of amateur dramtics considerably decreased till end of period. By the year of 2005, there were no members of musical perfomances but after that year, it had a steady increase till the end.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers most of the key features of the graph, identifying the overall trends for the film club, table tennis, and amateur dramatics. An overview is present, noting the main contrasts between activities such as table tennis surging and the film club fluctuating. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and misinterpretations in the description; for instance, the student states that the social centre is located in 'two different countries Melbourne and Australia', which is a misunderstanding of the prompt's geography. Furthermore, musical performances actually began with zero participants in 2000 and 2005, but the student states 'By the year of 2005, there were no members... but after that year, it had a steady increase', which is slightly imprecise regarding the starting point. Overall, the response is minimally adequate for the task, but lacks thorough development in places, landing it at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into a short introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph. There is a basic logical progression, attempting to group information by activity trends. However, paragraphing is somewhat inadequate, as the body of the report is combined into a single dense block instead of being logically split into manageable sections. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or mechanically, such as 'Unlike film arts' (referring to film club) and 'Conversly'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making the flow bumpy. It shows overall coherence at a Band 5.0 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'dramtically surged', 'fluctuation', and 'significantly rose'. However, there are numerous spelling errors ('dramtically', 'Comparitively', 'rised', 'steadly', 'Conversly', 'dramtics', 'perfomances') and awkward word choices ('two different countries Melbourne and Australia', 'cross connected'). The vocabulary range is adequate for communicating the basic features of the graph, but the persistent errors in spelling and collocation restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using 'Whereas' and 'Unlike'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with multiple errors including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'table tennis is the only participant who dramtically surged', 'film club had a slight decrease... but then rised'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural control is inconsistent. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.
