Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given line graph illustrates change in number of participants for various activities at one social club between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, table tennis and musical performances showed an upward trend, whereas amateur dramatics declined. Meanwhile, film club and martial arts remained relatively stable, while table tennis recorded the highest growth over the given period.

Looking first at the categories that increased, table tennis increased from about 19 in 2000 to 20 in 2010 before it climbed to more than 50 in 2020. Similarly, musical performance grew from no particpants in 2005 to 20 in 2020. Considering the next category that declines, amateur dramatics increased from 25 in 2000 to nearly 30 in 2005, before falling to about 5 in 2020.

Turning to the remaining category, martial arts remained relatively stable overall, despite some fluctuationsduring the period, and stood at around 38 at both the beginning and the end. However, film club declined from about 64 in 2000 to around 60 in 2010. It then recovered to about 64 in 2015 and subsequently increased to about 66 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making relevant comparisons across the categories. An appropriate overview is provided, correctly highlighting the upward trends in table tennis and musical performances, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the stability of martial arts and the film club. Data points are generally cited accurately, such as table tennis climbing to more than 50 in 2020. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, table tennis started around 16 in 2000 rather than 19, and musical performances started at zero in 2000 rather than 2005. Despite these minor discrepancies, the overall response is well-structured and covers the visual data comprehensively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically by trends into separate paragraphs, which makes the report easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used adequately and appropriately, such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', 'Looking first at', and 'Turning to the remaining category'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in transitional phrasing could make the flow even more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using terms such as 'upward trend', 'fluctuations', 'recovered', and 'subsequently'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary items effectively. However, there are occasional minor lexical inaccuracies, such as the spelling error 'particpants' and a slight awkwardness in phrasing categories (e.g., 'Considering the next category that declines'). Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning with reasonable precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses ('despite some fluctuations during the period', 'before it climbed to more than 50'). There are frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating good grammatical control. Grammatical errors are minimal, such as a missing space in 'fluctuationsduring', but they do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally accurate, and tense control across the past years is handled well.
