Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the chart, including the dominant position of the film club, the rise in table tennis, and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are several noticeable data inaccuracies and misreadings. For instance, the student states that table tennis reached 'almost 5 participants' in 2020, whereas the graph clearly shows it reached approximately 54. Similarly, musical performances are described as becoming 'almost 16 participants' in 2020, which is close to the actual value of 18, but the general reporting lacks precise comparisons and overall synthesis. The overview is somewhat disjointed and fails to effectively summarise the overarching trends. Consequently, the response addresses the task only partially, corresponding to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is structured into four paragraphs, providing a logical separation of introduction, overview, and body details. However, the progression within paragraphs is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and mechanical cohesive devices. Phrases such as 'While participants in table tennis in musical performances increased and participators who participated in amateur dramatics declined' are clunky and lack smooth logical links. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within the body paragraphs is faulty, and referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear. Overall organisation is present, but progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms and derivations of the same root words, such as 'participants', 'participators', and 'participated'. There are also instances of inappropriate word choices and spelling errors, such as 'icreased' instead of increased. While the student attempts less common vocabulary like 'elevated' and 'declined', the range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. Errors in word choice and morphology, such as 'participants in table tennis in musical performances', cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, preposition use, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'participants in film club leads' and 'the participant in film club were almost 64'. Many complex structures are faulty or awkward, leading to sentences that require re-reading to understand. Punctuation is basic, and grammatical errors occur with enough frequency to cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, aligning with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
