Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the task exceptionally well, presenting a fully developed overview and accurately reporting the key features and trends of the five activities. The candidate adeptly contrasts the sustained popularity of the Film Club with the dramatic growth in Table Tennis and Musical Performances, while correctly noting the decline in Amateur Dramatics and the relative stability of Martial Arts. Data points, such as starting and ending figures, are cited accurately and appropriately to support the comparisons. To reach the absolute highest level, the overview could perhaps synthesise the overall economic or structural shift even more tightly, though the current coverage is comprehensive, precise, and well-sustained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by well-sequenced body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'Regarding the remaining activities' are managed effectively to guide the reader seamlessly through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct category of information. To achieve an even higher standard, cohesive referencing could occasionally be made more seamless to avoid any slightly formulaic transitions, but overall, the logical flow and paragraph structure are handled with a high degree of skill.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The candidate demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic report, successfully utilizing less common lexical items such as 'fluctuations', 'sustained', 'frequented', and 'surge'. Word choice is generally precise, allowing for clear and effective communication of trends and comparisons. There are occasional minor inaccuracies in collocation or phrasing, such as 'participants amount' in the opening sentence, which hold the response back from the highest band. Incorporating a broader variety of sophisticated paraphrasing and completely natural collocations would elevate the lexical range further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and participial phrases, enabling the frequent production of error-free sentences. Grammatical control is generally strong, particularly in handling past and present tense markers relative to the timeline of the graph. However, a few minor mechanical errors persist, such as the subject-verb agreement issue in 'The line graphs illustrates' and the capitalization error 'First of all, In terms of'. Maintaining consistent proofreading for simple agreement errors and punctuation would help secure a higher proportion of completely error-free complex structures.
