Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to report main features and make some comparisons, the selection of data is erratic and lacks clarity. The overview attempts to highlight general trends, such as the consistent incline for the film club and the decline for amateur dramatics, but key trends are either under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the student reports that the film club was at '65 numbers of participants' and peaked at '65', failing to capture the full picture of the data accurately. Furthermore, some data points are misreported or vague, such as table tennis starting at '15' in 2000 and ending abruptly, missing the significant upward trajectory that defines the latter half of the graph. The overall impression is that ideas are limited and under-developed, keeping the task achievement score at a lower level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response displays some organization with an introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is weak. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'To expound the chart in detail', 'afterthat', and 'As further scrutiny reveals'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical transitions hinder the smooth flow of information. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to ensure that sentences and paragraphs are linked more naturally with a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices, establishing a clearer and more logical progression throughout the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation that cause some difficulty for the reader. Examples include phrases like 'marked consistently inclining trajectory', '65 numbers of participants', 'activily engaged', and 'jumped tp the peak'. Additionally, spelling and word form errors, such as 'reoresented', detract from the quality of the writing. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these attempts are often inaccurate or unnatural. To improve, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range and focus on precision in word choice and correct spelling, ensuring that terms like 'increase' or 'decrease' are used with appropriate collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly constructed complex attempts. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage throughout the text, which can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of grammatical errors include 'the information on the number of participants in different activities at social centre', missing articles like 'a social centre', and awkward tense usage and prepositions such as 'in starting of the table involvement'. Complex sentence attempts are often faulty, leading to structural breakdowns. To progress to a higher band, the student must increase their repertoire of complex sentence forms and work on fundamental accuracy regarding verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles.
