Student answer (Band 8.0)
The line graph gives information about the number of participants who took part in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, it can be seen that the film club had the highest number of participants throughout the period, while table tennis showed a significant increase. In contrast, amateur dramatics experienced a considerable downward trend.
In detail, the numbers of participants in the film club and martial arts were approximately 64 and 36 respectively in 2000. The figure for the film club decreased slightly to 60 in 2010, before rising gradually to around 66 by the end of the period.
In the meantime, participation in martial arts fell to approximately 32 in 2005 and then increased to 38 in 2010. After dropping slightly to 34 in 2015, it rose again to around 36 in 2020. Table tennis, on the other hand, increased from about 16 participants in 2000 to 20 in 2005 and remained stable until 2010. From 2010 to 2020, it experienced a rapid surge, reaching approximately 54 participants by the end of the period.
Moving on to amateur dramatics, its number of participants stood at around 26 in 2000 and increased slightly to 28 in 2005. However, it then declined sharply to 20 in 2010 and continued to fall, reaching only about 6 participants in 2020.
By contrast, musical performances had no participants in 2000 and 2005. The figure then rose to around 12 in 2010 and continued to increase gradually, reaching approximately 18 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a fully developed overview and accurate reporting of the main features and trends. The student skillfully highlights the film club as the highest participant group throughout the period, points out the significant upward trajectory of table tennis, and contrasts these with the decline in amateur dramatics and the initial zero participation in musical performances. Key data points, such as the peak of the film club at around 66 and the surge in table tennis to 54, are accurately selected and compared. There are no notable omissions or inaccuracies in the data cited, fully satisfying the requirements for a high-level response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly by activity and time period, allowing the reader to follow the trends effortlessly. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'In detail', 'In the meantime', and 'Moving on to' are used flexibly and appropriately to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is managed very well, with each main trend allocated to its own distinct section. While referencing and paragraph transitions are generally smooth, a slightly tighter integration of the closing summary point regarding musical performances would elevate the structure further.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to academic report writing. Less common lexical items and phrasing—such as 'considerable downward trend', 'remaining stable', 'rapid surge', and 'declined sharply'—are used skillfully and with good awareness of style and collocation. Word choices are precise, and spelling is accurate throughout. There are only occasional minor instances where alternative phrasing could enhance naturalness, but overall, the lexical control is strong and allows for a precise description of visual data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
A wide range of complex sentence structures is used effectively, including temporal clauses ('before rising gradually', 'after dropping slightly') and comparative structures. The vast majority of sentences are completely error-free, demonstrating excellent control over verb forms, past tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within academic patterns. Punctuation is accurate, and punctuation marks like commas are handled correctly in introductory and transitional phrases. The rare minor slips do not detract from the overall clarity and high level of grammatical precision.
