Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main trends and data points across the five activities. The student selects key features effectively, such as identifying the film club as the most consistently popular activity and highlighting the significant upward trend in table tennis alongside the decline in amateur dramatics. The overview captures the main global patterns well. To achieve a higher band, the response could extend and support some of its comparisons even further, avoiding slight generalisations and ensuring every movement is tightly linked to the provided data without minor omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the response. Information is grouped sensibly by overall trends in the introduction and overview, followed by specific data breakdowns in the subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the comparisons, such as 'By contrast' and 'while'. However, paragraphing and sentence structure in the overview section show some mechanical phrasing, such as consecutive sentence fragments starting with 'While'. Achieving a higher level would require even more seamless and flexible transitions and a more polished integration of the summary points.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing terms like 'participants', 'gradually', 'recovering', and 'fluctuated' appropriately. Less common items and collocation are attempted, such as 'significant growth' and 'increasing sharply'. There are, however, occasional lexical issues and clumsy phrasings, such as 'While table tennis is the most significant growth' (where a noun is used where a description of a trend is needed) and the repetitive use of basic reporting verbs. To move higher, a wider variety of precise lexical chunks and flawless word choices would be necessary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over past tenses and comparative structures. There are frequent error-free sentences, particularly in the data-heavy body paragraphs. However, a few structural errors and punctuation slips persist, notably in the overview where sentence boundaries are mishandled ('Overall, the the film club...' with a duplicated article, and fragment sentences like 'While table tennis is the most significant growth.'). Because it fully meets the criteria for the lower band while exhibiting some characteristics of the higher band—such as varied clause structures—it earns this specific score.
