Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. The overview at the beginning and end outlines the general trends successfully, noting that the film club remained the most popular while musical performances received the fewest participants. However, certain parts of the task are developed more fully than others. For example, while the writer accurately captures the notable surge in table tennis and the steady trend of the film club, some statements regarding amateur dramatics contain inconsistencies and slight misinterpretations of the data, such as claiming the number dropped from 25 to less than 5 when the graph indicates a drop from 26 to 6. Furthermore, some ideas are repetitive, with information about the film club and musical performances restated across multiple paragraphs without adding new analytical depth. Nevertheless, a clear picture of the data is presented, satisfying the requirements for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introductory description to body paragraphs detailing specific trends, and finishing with an overall summary. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, and basic cohesive devices such as 'while', 'however', and 'nevertheless' are employed to connect clauses and sentences. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. The referencing and linking between sentences occasionally falter, creating a slightly disjointed reading experience, as seen in abrupt transitions between sentences within the body paragraphs like 'Amateure dramatics, intially got greater numbers than table tenis...'. Additionally, pronoun referencing lacks precision, and the overall progression between some ideas could be smoother to secure a higher level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs and nouns such as 'steady', 'considerable', 'surged', and 'participants'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation throughout the text. Examples include spelling and form errors such as 'verticle', 'muscial', 'progess', 'increased' instead of 'increase', 'ameteure', 'intially', 'tenis', 'decaded', and 'obsolete' where another term like 'declining' would be more appropriate. While these lexical errors and typos do not seriously impede communication, they occur regularly enough to restrict the score to this band, preventing the vocabulary from achieving the precision and control required for higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as subordinate clauses with 'while' and 'although'. There are instances of good control over basic sentence patterns, but the text is marred by some errors in grammar, articles, and pluralisation. Examples of grammatical lapses include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'film club have' or missing articles and plural forms like 'numbers of participants activities' and 'the lowest participants'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but prepositional use and word forms within grammatical structures occasionally falter, as in 'increased in numbers in the last decades'. These errors are present throughout the essay, though they rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammar firmly within this category.
