Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to cover the main trends from the graph, identifying upward and downward movements. However, it only partially addresses the task requirements because it is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence at the end ('In 2020 the nu,'), failing to provide a fully realised conclusion or overview. While some key data points are mentioned, such as the initial and final figures for the film club and table tennis, the selection of data is somewhat limited and lacks sufficient detail for some categories. Furthermore, the length requirement of 150 words is not met, as the response contains only 116 words, which restricts the depth of the overall reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident in the structure, beginning with an introductory statement and an overview paragraph, followed by details. However, there is no clear overall progression across the body paragraphs, and the abrupt ending disrupts the flow. Cohesive devices are used minimally and rather mechanically, such as 'In 2000' and 'In 2020', leading to a repetitive sentence structure. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks cohesive ties between sentences. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive markers to link ideas smoothly and ensure a logical development from start to finish without trailing off.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, featuring basic terms such as 'numbers', 'participants', 'trend', and 'increased'. There are noticeable errors in word formation and choice, such as 'filmclub' (written as one word), 'simillar' (spelling error), and 'participanted' (incorrect word form). Less common lexical items are rarely attempted, and the range remains limited. To reach a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of precise vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'experienced a dramatic surge', while eliminating spelling and word-formation mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are sparse, and there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, the sentence starting with 'While, the participation...' contains an unnecessary comma and an awkward phrasing. Articles and prepositions are sometimes mishandled, such as 'over the year' instead of 'over the years'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should incorporate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures while exercising tighter control over punctuation and basic agreement.
