Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally and remains incomplete, cutting off abruptly in the middle of a sentence regarding table tennis. In addition, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls significantly short of the minimum word count of 150 words. While the writer attempts to report on some of the activities shown in the graph, such as the Film club, Martial arts, and Amateur dramatics, the coverage is limited and lacks a complete overview or fully developed comparisons across the entire period. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure the task is completed in full, present a clear overview of the main trends, and meet the minimum length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response exhibits some basic organization with a clear separation between the introduction and body details, but it lacks an overall progression due to the incomplete nature of the text and the lack of a concluding overview. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final section is left dangling as a sentence fragment ("Table tennis "). Basic cohesive devices and referencing are used, such as time markers like "Over the period of 2000-2020" and "In 2000", but these are simple and mechanical. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer needs to ensure ideas are logically sequenced throughout a fully developed essay, use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices, and maintain a clear, unbroken structure from introduction to conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic reporting, employing words such as "participants", "activities", "highest", "decreased", and "fluctated" (note the spelling error in fluctuated). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like "ranging from approximately" and "sharp decline", though control is inconsistent. There are minor lexical and spelling slips, such as omitting articles in phrases like "illustrates number of participants" and "different type of activities". To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider, more precise range of vocabulary, improve word choice and collocations regarding statistical trends, and eliminate spelling inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time phrases such as "Over the period of 2000-2020, many people took part in activities like...". However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding article usage, such as missing the definite article before "line graph" and "Film club", as well as noun-number agreement issues like "different type of activities" instead of "types". Control over verb tenses is generally understandable, but preposition use in temporal phrases shows occasional awkwardness. To progress, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences and pay closer attention to articles, plurals, and overall sentence completeness.
