Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task by covering the general trends and selecting key features from the chart, such as the film club maintaining high numbers and table tennis experiencing significant growth. However, the information presented contains several inaccuracies when compared to the visual data. For instance, the student states that musical performances were 'most likely to be less attractive... that was the reason the numbers declined overtime,' whereas the chart clearly shows that musical performances started at zero in 2000 and actually increased to 18 by 2020. Furthermore, some ideas are inadequately developed, and the overview lacks clarity regarding the broader picture of the data, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an overall structure with paragraphs dedicated to an introduction, an overview, and body details, showing some sense of organisation. However, there is a lack of clear progression throughout the text, and cohesive devices are sometimes handled mechanically or inaccurately. For example, the use of 'Whereas,' and 'On the contrary,' is awkward and disrupts the logical flow between clauses and sentences. Referencing can also be unclear, such as 'The case was same with film club joiners,' which makes the connection between ideas bumpy. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion needs to be managed more skillfully to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for communicating basic points, such as 'gained momentum' and 'drastically decreased.' However, the range is limited and contains noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and phrasing that occasionally cause confusion. Examples include 'estimate of participants, who participated in variety of activities' (repetitive and missing articles), 'centre of attention' (inappropriate idiom for data analysis), and 'fighters who participated in martial arts' (inaccurate collocation, as martial arts participants are not fighters in this context). Spelling is generally acceptable, but more precision and a wider variety of less common lexical items are required to move up the scale.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with frequent errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and punctuation, such as comma splices and misplaced commas ('upto 57 contestants till 2020, On the contrary, The numbers...'). Prepositional usage and article omission also recur ('in social centre of Melbourne', 'in entire time'), and complex structures are frequently faulty. To improve, the student needs to secure better accuracy in basic sentence construction and refine the control of complex grammar.
