Student answer (Band 6.0)

The image illustrates the number of participants for 5 different activities, from Film club to Musical performances at the social center in Melbourne from the period 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club had the most participants throughout the entire period, followed by martial arts which had steady development. Amateur dramatics lost the most number of participants in later decade. Table tennis & Musical performances both seem to have a dramatic increase in their participants in the later period.

Film club started with the highest number of participants at 65 in 2000, had linear development throughout its period to 2020. In comparison, the development of Martial arts which started at around 38 in 2000 had several fluctuations in numbers but had overall similar development. Amateur dramatics started quite high than the table tennis and musical performances at 27 approx but faced a gradual decrease in their participant numbers that equalled table tennis and musical performances participants around 19 ,14 in 2010 and 2014 respectively.

Table tennis start at 18 in 2000 having a steady start at first till 2010 having 20 participant faced a dramatic increase in participants around 52 in 2020 showing one of the fastest development. Whereas the musical performances started at 0 in 2005 had a positive growth to around 17 participant in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the five activities and providing an overview of the main trends. However, some areas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the overview correctly notes that the film club remained popular and table tennis surged, but some specific figures mentioned in the body paragraphs slightly misalign with the visual data, such as stating that amateur dramatics equalled other activities around '19, 14 in 2010 and 2014 respectively' rather than 2015. The selection of features is generally relevant, with clear attempts to make comparisons between the categories, satisfying the criteria for this band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different activities and timeframes. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in the slightly awkward transitions between sentences and repetitive referencing. For example, expressions like 'Table tennis start at 18 in 2000 having a steady start at first till 2010 having 20 participant faced a dramatic increase' lack smooth cohesive links and result in run-on structures that hinder seamless progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'fluctuations', 'development', and 'dramatic increase'. However, there are noticeable word choice and word form errors that occasionally detract from precision, such as 'lost the most number of participants' instead of 'experienced the largest drop in participation', and 'started quite high than' instead of 'higher than'. Spelling and word formation are generally clear enough not to impede communication, but these slips prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, and article omissions, such as 'Table tennis start at 18' (instead of 'started'), 'participant' (plural needed), and 'started at 0 in 2005 had a positive growth'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning of the sentences remains clear to the reader.
