Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the numbers of participants taking part in five social activities at a social center in Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is evident that film club is the most significant activity. However, table tennis, and musical performances also witnessed an increase in shares whereas amateur dramatic experienced a steep decrease. In contrast martial arts fluctuated all the time.

Film club was at peak in 2000 and was above 60 participants it hovered around this number for two decades and remained above 60 in 2020 as well. Table tennis on the other hand was not a popular activity in 2000 it saw a slight increase by 2005 to 20 activists and levelled off by 2010 at this point though after 2010 it soared and reached above 50 participants by 2020. Furthermore, musical performances were started in 2005 and steadily increased above throughout the given time.

In contrast amateur dramatics declined after 2005 from approximately 30 members and bottomed out below 10 by 2020. Conversely, martial arts showed some fluctuations after every five years however its numbers did not changed much.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph, such as the dominance of the film club and the dramatic rise in table tennis. An overview is provided, noting the general trends across the categories. However, some areas are under-developed or lack full data support. For instance, the discussion of martial arts states that its numbers did not change much, but does not provide specific data points to substantiate the claim fully, and the overview contains minor mechanical generalisations. To reach a higher band, the response would need to ensure all main trends are fully extended with precise data comparisons throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The writing presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the overview. Information and ideas are generally well-sequenced, using appropriate introductory and contrasting cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Table tennis on the other hand', and 'Furthermore'. However, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical or faulty, particularly in paragraphing where the overview is placed directly after the introduction rather than at the end, and some referencing is occasionally abrupt. To move up, paragraph structure and the integration of the overview need to be managed with greater flexibility and natural flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'hovered around', 'levelled off', 'soared', and 'bottomed out'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'amateur dramatic' instead of 'amateur dramatics', 'activists' instead of 'participants' or 'members', and the awkward phrase 'steadily increased above throughout the given time'. These lexical slips and minor word-formation errors do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on precise lexical collocation and accurate word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and participial phrases. There are, however, some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing commas in compound sentences and introductory clauses, run-on structures (e.g., 'In contrast martial arts fluctuated all the time'), and passive/active voice confusions like 'were started in 2005' and 'did not changed much'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and they rarely impede communication. To reach the next band, the writer needs to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over tense consistency and punctuation.
