The line graph compares the number of people who participanted in five different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020. Overall, the number of participants in film club were consistently the highest over the period, whereas those in amateur dramatics became the lowest after 2015. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by providing a clear overview and reporting the main trends and comparisons across the five activities. The overview captures the dominant position of the film club and the downward trajectory of amateur dramatics, while body paragraphs appropriately highlight key data points such as the surge in table tennis and the emergence of musical performances. However, some aspects are developed more fully than others; for instance, the description of martial arts lacks a detailed explanation of its trajectory beyond a brief mention of fluctuation, and some reported figures are slightly imprecise compared to the source data. To move further up, the response needs to consistently present fully developed and precise data points across all categories without minor generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear logical progression from the introductory summary through distinct body paragraphs dedicated to different activities. Information is organized logically, and cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'by contrast', and 'meanwhile' are employed to guide the reader through comparisons. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally slightly mechanical or awkward, as seen in the transition 'with those who participated in musical performances joined just after 2005' in the introduction. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but sharpening the transitional phrases and ensuring smoother referencing between sentences would elevate the organizational control to the next level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'substantial growth' and 'least attractive activity'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'the second popular activity' instead of 'the second most popular activity', 'matrial arts' (spelling error), and 'Notabably'. Additionally, phrases like 'those who participated in musical performances joined' show some awkward phrasing in collocation and word formation. To achieve a higher band, the vocabulary needs to be used with greater precision and freedom from spelling and word-choice slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses with 'although', 'while', and 'which'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'the number of participants in film club were' (agreement error with 'number'), 'with those who participated in musical performances joined' (faulty participial phrase), and 'when became the second popular activity' (missing subject pronoun). Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. To reach the next band, the writer must produce more frequent error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over subject-verb agreement and relative clause formation.
