Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to describe the five activities shown in the line graph, the information reported is inaccurate and confused. For example, the student frequently misinterprets the data, citing percentages instead of the absolute numbers of participants, and states incorrect values throughout, such as claiming the film club started at 67 percent or that musical performances began at 0 percent in 2005 when the timeline actually starts in 2000. Furthermore, there is no clear overview provided to summarise the main trends, meaning the response remains limited and under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation in the text, as the student attempts to structure paragraphs around the different activities. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical flow across the essay as a whole. Cohesive devices are largely absent or inadequate, leading to a repetitive and disjointed style where sentences simply list data points without connecting them effectively. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, with massive blocks of text or run-on sentences that make it difficult to follow the writer's line of thought.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, demonstrating only a minimally adequate range for the task. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary relating to trends, such as 'decreases', 'increases', and 'remains stable', but these are often used inaccurately alongside frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'particiepants', 'Melbourn', 'material arts' instead of martial arts, and 'drmatics'. These lexical inaccuracies and persistent misspellings cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to a basic level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is very limited, relying primarily on simple and repetitive sentence structures. Attempts to form complex sentences or provide multi-clause descriptions are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. For instance, sentences often lack main verbs or proper conjunctions, such as 'initially the film club the number of participients in 2000 are 67 percent'. These persistent errors can cause considerable difficulty for the reader trying to parse the meaning of the sentences.
