Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the task by selecting a few main features from the graph, such as the growth of Table tennis and the decline of Amateur dramatics, but the coverage is very limited and incomplete. The overview is partially stated, but the information provided is disjointed and cut off near the end of the text. Furthermore, there are inaccuracies in reporting the data, such as stating that Table tennis rose from 15 to 2000, which confuses numbers with years. To move to a higher level, the response needs to provide a fully developed overview and accurately report and compare all relevant data trends across the categories without incomplete sentences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the text, with attempts to structure the response using transition words like 'Overall', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly'. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by fragmented sentences and incomplete descriptions, particularly at the end where the text trails off. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal cohesion and fail to link ideas smoothly. To improve, the writer should ensure that every paragraph contains a complete, logically sequenced argument supported by appropriate cohesive devices rather than mechanical transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, though it is minimally adequate to convey basic information about trends, such as 'growth', 'decline', and 'fluctuating'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'Austraila', 'significantly decline' instead of 'significant decline', and awkward phrasing like 'the sameframe work'. These errors sometimes cause difficulty or confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary and precise collocation while maintaining accurate word forms and correct spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying on simple patterns that are frequently marred by basic errors. There are frequent grammatical mistakes involving verb forms, prepositions, and article usage, such as 'the Table tennis are rise increased', 'participants in Amateur dramatics are dcreased experienced', and confusing numbers with years ('from the 15 to 2000'). These frequent errors and faulty attempts at complex structures cause noticeable difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must focus on basic sentence construction, accurate verb tenses, and eliminating structural confusion between numerical values and years.
