Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the main features and trends of the five activities shown in the graph. The overview successfully identifies the Film club as having the highest participation and Amateur dramatics as having the lowest. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, and certain details lack precision. For example, the writer notes that the Film club reached 65 persons in 2020 and that Amateur dramatics fell to 8 members, while also capturing the general trajectory of Table Tennis and Martial arts. Yet, the development of these points is somewhat uneven, reflecting a standard where all parts are addressed but some features are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies compared to the source data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction and body paragraphs that attempt to group the data logically. However, the progression between sentences and ideas is occasionally disrupted by mechanical or faulty cohesion. Paragraphing is attempted, but the transition between the overview and the detailed body points is abrupt. Furthermore, referencing is not always clear, and the lack of flexible cohesive devices means the text relies heavily on repetitive sentence-starting structures like stating the activity name directly. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to ensure a smoother flow of ideas and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive tools.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey basic trends such as 'increased', 'flactuating', and 'highest amount of respondents'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word form. Words like 'involned', 'varity', and 'flactuating' contain spelling or morphological errors. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items, but these are often combined with inappropriate collocation or form, such as referring to participants as 'person' instead of 'people'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score, and more precision and variety are required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and comparative constructions. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that surface throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors ('the Martial arts participant's number flactuating'), awkward phrasing in comparative structures ('the same amount of members like 2000'), and missing articles or incorrect prepositions. While these errors rarely completely impede understanding, their persistent presence across various sentence types indicates a need for tighter control over grammatical accuracy and punctuation rules.
