Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line chart illustrates the number of participants, taking part in different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia during 20 years from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, participation in two activities remained almost the same. Ratio of participants fluctuated dramatically in teo activities increasing in one ad decreasing in other. An activity newly started in 2005 and increased steadily.
Number of participants at social centre in film club and martial arts fluctuated slightly over years but remained almost the same in 2020 as they were in 2000. In amateur dramatics were 27 participants in 2000. After increasing slightly this figure plummeted dramatically over next years and ended up with less than 10 participants in 2020.
On the other hand, table tennis started with fewer than 20 participants in 2000. This figure stayed at 20 in 2005 and 2010 and then increased uniformly to more than 50 participations in 2020. Musical performances were newly announced in 2005 and participations in this activity increased from 0 to 20 in 2015 and more people participated in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the main trends and reporting key data points across the five activities. The general features are identified, such as the stability of the film club and martial arts, and the contrasting trends of table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, some areas are more fully developed than others, which prevents the score from reaching a higher level. For instance, the discussion of certain figures lacks precise detail or contains minor inaccuracies, such as stating there were 27 participants for amateur dramatics in 2000 when the chart shows approximately 26. Additionally, the overview bullet points in the second paragraph are somewhat brief and slightly disjointed in their summary of the movements. Nevertheless, all relevant data sets are covered, and the main comparisons are established.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs dedicated to different activity groupings. Progression is generally maintained throughout the essay. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For example, transitional phrases like "On the other hand" are used, but referencing across sentences can feel slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is employed to separate ideas, but the second paragraph acting as the overview is overly fragmented into isolated single-sentence statements rather than flowing together. While individual ideas are generally understandable, the internal links between sentences and paragraphs lack the smooth flexibility required for higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs such as "plummeted", "fluctuated", and "increased steadily". However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the response, such as writing "teo" instead of "two", "ad" instead of "and", and "participations" instead of "participants". While these inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of precision and control over word forms and spelling. Despite these occasional lexical lapses, the vocabulary deployed is sufficient to cover the main trends and comparisons required by the prompt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation that place the response at this level. For instance, there are missing articles or prepositional awkwardness, such as in the sentence "Number of participants at social centre in film club..." where articles are omitted, and "over years" instead of "over the years". Another example of a slightly awkward structure is found in "In amateur dramatics were 27 participants in 2000." Despite these various errors in sentence construction and article usage, they rarely impede overall communication, and the reader can easily follow the intended meaning.
