Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates information regarding how many candidates participated in different activities at a single social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020. Overall, there are five kinds of activities from which players of table tennis and musical performances inclined over the years, whereas number of participants of amateur dramatics declined. Meanwhile, partakers of film club and martial arts maintained a constant proportion in the given years.

Throughout the 20 years, the most popular entertainment was film club, while the least popular one was musical performances. Activities including table tennis and musical performances, however attracted participants towards them as the years passed. The number of participants of table tennis who were only about 15 in the initial year, rose to around 55 in 2020, after reaching to 20 in 2010. Meanwhile, performers of music who were none till 2005 increased to almost 12, before inclining slowly to approximately 20 in 2020.

In the first year, the participants of amateur dramatics were roughly 27, and decreased rapidly to only 5 in the final year. However, number of members of film club and martial arts remained stable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by providing a clear overview and highlighting key features and comparisons of the data. The main trends are correctly identified, such as the rising popularity of table tennis and musical performances, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the relative stability of the film club and martial arts. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as describing the initial number of table tennis participants as 'about 15' when it starts closer to 16, and misinterpreting the musical performances series by stating they were 'none till 2005' before reaching 12. Despite these slight lapses in precision, the response achieves a solid overall score by covering all categories and outlining the main visual trends adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the overview. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of activities. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in transitions like 'Meanwhile, partakers of film club' and the repetitive use of 'Meanwhile' to introduce new points. Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, but the overall structure allows the reader to follow the information without major difficulty. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices rather than relying on formulaic transition words.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the general trends shown in the graph. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'inclined', 'proportion', and 'maintained a constant proportion', though some word choices are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'candidates' instead of 'participants' and 'partakers' instead of 'participants' or 'members'. Spelling is generally accurate, and word-choice errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher lexical band, the writer should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and natural collocations, avoiding awkward phrasing when describing statistical trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'players of table tennis and musical performances inclined over the years' and 'after reaching to 20', where preposition usage is faulty. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and the errors present rarely impede communication. The presence of these recurring structural and prepositional inaccuracies keeps the performance at this band level. To improve, the writer must ensure better control over complex sentence patterns and check verb-preposition collocations.
