Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting on all activities provided in the graph over the specified timeframe. An overview is present, highlighting the main trends such as the high participation in the film club and the growth in table tennis and musical performances alongside the decline in amateur dramatics. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others, meaning certain trends are mentioned briefly without fully exploring the wider context of the data. For instance, the descriptions of martial arts and table tennis contain minor inaccuracies regarding exact values or trends, such as stating that table tennis remained stable for five years when it actually grew slightly between 2005 and 2010. Nonetheless, the core requirements of selecting, reporting, and comparing the main features are adequately met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. Information is generally grouped by activity and time periods, allowing the reader to follow the flow of data easily. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'then', though some referencing and transitions can feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to divide the introduction, overview, and specific data details into distinct blocks. While the logical structure is sound and supports the overall task, occasional lapses in referencing mean the progression is not entirely seamless throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical trends and comparisons. The writer attempts less common vocabulary with varying degrees of success, using phrases like 'experienced a significant increase' and 'frequently faced some fluctuation'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors that prevent the response from achieving a higher level, such as spelling 'until' as 'untill', 'followed' as 'follwed', and awkward phrasings like 'engaged on different types of activities' instead of 'engaged in'. Despite these slips, the lexical choices do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and subordinate structures. There are several errors in grammar, prepositions, and agreement—such as 'table tennis participants was' instead of 'were', 'participated' instead of 'participated in', and issues with prepositions like 'over the time'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though occasional comma splices or missing commas occur. These grammatical errors and awkward structures persist throughout the text, but they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning without undue difficulty.
