Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 134 words. While the candidate attempts to provide an overview and mentions some trends such as the film club and musical performances, the response only partially addresses the task. The selection of data is limited, and key information regarding other activities like table tennis and martial arts is completely omitted. Furthermore, some of the data reported contains inaccuracies or vague phrasing, such as 'around 64 number of humans'. To improve, the candidate must ensure the essay reaches the required word length and covers all major trends and comparisons shown in the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation in the response, featuring an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the paragraphs are overly fragmented. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inappropriately, such as 'to commence with' and 'Adding more'. Paragraphing is also disrupted, with a lack of cohesive links between sentences. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to ensure ideas are logically sequenced with smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs, while avoiding repetitive or awkward signposting language.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and basic, with noticeable word choice and word form errors that impede communication at times. Examples include 'seprate activitiesat', 'number of humans', 'ratio decline', and 'little rose' instead of 'rise'. Spelling errors are frequent, such as 'seprate', 'wheras', and 'intrest'. The range of vocabulary is barely adequate to describe the chart. To enhance lexical resource, the student should expand their range of vocabulary to include precise descriptions of trends and eliminate basic spelling and word formation mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex forms. Frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and tense consistency cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'The assigned line graph represent' (subject-verb agreement error), 'there was 0 participants was there' (grammatical confusion), and missing capitalisation and spacing throughout the text. To improve, the writer needs to practice basic grammatical rules such as subject-verb agreement, proper use of articles and plurals, and correct verb tenses when describing past data.
