The line graph below illustrates the data on the number of individuals for various activities in one social community in Melbourne, Australia, for the period 2000 to 2020.

Overall, film club participation remained relatively stable throughout the period, while table tennis experienced a considerable increase. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and making some relevant comparisons, but certain areas are underdeveloped. For instance, the overview mentions that martial arts showed a 'gradual upward trend', but the specific data for martial arts fluctuates and does not clearly demonstrate a sustained increase. Similarly, while the body paragraph attempts to track figures such as the film club having around 65 participants in 2000, some data points are generalised or misread slightly, such as claiming that musical performances reached 15 participants by 2020 when the graph indicates a value closer to 18. The selection of features is present, but to move to a higher band, all trends and supporting data points must be reported with greater precision and consistency.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs. Ideas are logically sequenced, beginning with a summary of general trends before moving into specific figures. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty. Phrases such as 'after that, it went down' and the repetitive use of chronological data points without varied transition signals make the progression feel slightly formulaic. Furthermore, referencing could be improved to ensure smoother links between sentences. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure seamless transitions between general statements and detailed support.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used to accomplish the task, including descriptive terms like 'relatively stable', 'considerable increase', and 'fluctuated'. The student also attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'soared', which demonstrates an awareness of stylistic variety. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as referring to the film club as an 'activity center' rather than a category, and minor awkwardness in phrasing like 'Martial arts have always fluctuated in all years'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication. To reach the next band, the student should refine their lexical control and use less common lexical items more naturally and precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as 'while table tennis experienced a considerable increase' and 'In 2000, there were no participants...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as comma splices ('...and then it rose to 67 in 2020. Martial arts have always fluctuated...') and occasional tense inconsistencies when shifting between past data and general descriptions. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To progress further, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with higher accuracy and polish punctuation control to ensure error-free multi-clause sentences.
