Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and reporting the main features and trends of the five activities shown in the line graph. The overview captures the general trajectory of the data, noting the film club's prominence, the upward trends of table tennis and musical performances, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the fluctuations in martial arts. However, some ideas and figures are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies compared to the visual data, such as quoting exact numbers that slightly misalign with the graph (e.g., musical performances starting at 0 and rising differently). This positions the response comfortably in the middle band, successfully covering the requirements while showing some minor limitations in precise data reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the different activities logically. Information and ideas flow reasonably well, and the progression from general trends to specific data points is mostly clear. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, with awkward transitional phrases such as 'While, martial arts fluctuated' and 'Moreover, table tennis recorded increased slightly'. Furthermore, referencing and paragraph linking could be smoother to achieve a fully natural and seamless progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used adequately, but mechanical cohesive devices prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items related to data trends such as 'fluctuated', 'declined steadily', and 'rose significantly'. However, there are notable instances of awkward word choice, incorrect word forms, and collocation errors, such as 'accumulated declined steadily', 'recorded increased slightly', and 'experienced grow gradually'. While these lexical inaccuracies and minor spelling slips do not impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score to the competent level. To improve, the student needs to pay closer attention to word formation and ensure that verbs and adjectives are paired naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like subordinate clauses and comparative expressions. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and sentence structure, particularly involving awkward verb patterns, tense consistency, and prepositional usage, such as 'experienced grow gradually' instead of 'experienced gradual growth', and punctuation slips. Although these errors rarely impede communication and the reader can follow the overall meaning, the presence of these recurring structural inaccuracies places the grammar score below the threshold for higher bands. A greater focus on accurate verb forms and syntactic control is required.
