Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five activities shown in the chart. An overview is provided, highlighting key trends such as the film club remaining the most popular and amateur dramatics declining. However, some areas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating that martial arts remained around 40 when it was actually closer to 35, and placing musical performances near 15 instead of slightly under 20. To reach the higher band, the response would need to consistently report data with greater precision and extend the overview to capture more nuanced relationships between the categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used to group related activities, though the division between paragraphs could be managed more effectively to separate rising and falling trends cleanly. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Overall', 'After that', and 'In contrast', but referencing is occasionally mechanical or repetitive. The use of pronouns and substitution could be more varied to ensure smoother transitions between sentences. To achieve a higher band, the logical flow and organisational structure would need to be more sophisticated and seamless throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'dramatically rose', 'massively decreased', and 'participation'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'Melbourne’s people who was participated', 'the figure of film club was far high then', and 'number of participations'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but awkward phrasing like 'ups and down situation' detracts from precision. To move to the next band, the student needs to use a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary with greater accuracy in collocation and stylistic control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordinate clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'who was participated', 'the number start to increase', 'the member of film club', and 'with 5 member approximately'. Punctuation is also occasionally weak, missing full stops between independent clauses. These errors reflect a limitation in grammatical control that prevents the writing from attaining a higher band. To improve, the student must produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and exercise better control over complex grammatical structures.
