Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph compares the number of participants in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia over a 20-year period from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, while musical performances became the least popular. The participation in table tennis and amateur dramatics showed a downward trend, whereas martial arts fluctuated.
In 2000, the film club had about 65 participants, and this figure remained relatively stable, with a slight increase to 65 in 2020. Table tennis started with 17 participants in 2000, rose slightly, and by 2020 had become the second most popular activity with around 54 participants, overtaking martial arts.
Martial arts had around 37 participants in 2000 and saw a rise to nearly 40 in the following years, but then declined to about 35 by 2020.
Amateur dramatics and musical performances had the fewest participants. Amateur dramatics began with 27 participants in 2000, dropped to around 10 in 2010, and then recovered slightly to 15 in 2020. Musical performances started with 20 participants but steadily declined to only 5 participants by 2020, making it the least popular activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response presents an overview with some main trends, but it contains significant inaccuracies and contradictions when compared against the visual data. For instance, the overview incorrectly states that amateur dramatics showed a downward trend while martial arts fluctuated (when actually amateur dramatics dropped significantly from 26 to 6, while martial arts remained relatively stable around 32-38). Furthermore, the body paragraphs misinterpret several key data points: table tennis is described as starting at 17 and rising to become the second most popular activity, but the text misses the dramatic upward trajectory clearly visible; more critically, amateur dramatics and musical performances are severely misread towards the end of the text, claiming musical performances started with 20 participants and declined to 5 when the graph shows they started at zero in 2000 and 2005. Because the key features and data are reported inaccurately, the task is addressed only partially, placing this criterion at the current level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. The introduction successfully paraphrases the prompt, and the text is broken down into logical paragraphs that group related activities together, such as grouping amateur dramatics and musical performances in the final paragraph. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to link ideas, such as 'whereas' and 'while' for contrast, and referencing is generally clear throughout. The overall arrangement makes the text easy to follow, and paragraphing is managed appropriately to structure the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common items and reporting language are attempted, such as 'relatively stable', 'overtaking', and 'steadily declined'. Word choice is mostly appropriate for describing trends, though there are occasional inaccuracies, such as mischaracterising the data points themselves. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, allowing the reader to understand the intended meaning without difficulty, which satisfies the requirements of this band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with a variety of structures used to report the graphical data. Control of grammar and punctuation is generally sound, and there are frequent error-free sentences. Past tense forms for reporting historical data from 2000 to 2020 are handled with good consistency. While a few minor slips may occur, grammar and punctuation errors do not impede communication at all, reflecting a solid command of sentence structure.
