Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by attempting to describe the main features and trends of the line chart. However, several figures are misreported or inaccurate, such as stating that nearly 70 individuals participated in the film club across all years (when values fluctuated around 60-66) or claiming that amateur dramatics decreased by 20 people in 2010 (when it was actually around 20 total participants). The overview is simplistic and attempts to summarize the data, but the lack of accurate data reporting and limited development mean the response remains restricted at this level. To improve, the writer must ensure that data points are read correctly from the graph and that key comparisons between categories are made more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organization with paragraphs attempting to group different activities, but there is no clear overall progression across the text. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes awkward, such as starting multiple sentences with 'TO BEGIN WITH', 'HOWEVER', and 'ALTHOUGH' without smooth transitions. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas feels disjointed. Referencing and logical sequencing need to be strengthened to guide the reader through the data more effectively. To achieve a higher band, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties naturally and ensure that the progression of ideas from the introduction to the body and overview follows a logical, connected path.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and basic, with frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'MULTIPAL' instead of multiple, 'ILLUSTRIGHTS' instead of illustrates, 'CERTRE' instead of centre, 'POPULERED' instead of popular, and the unnatural use of 'HUMANS' instead of people or participants. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'GRADUALLY INCREASED' and 'DECLINED SHARPLY', but lexical control is weak throughout. To progress, the student needs to build a more accurate vocabulary specific to describing data and eliminate basic spelling and word-formation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and pluralization, such as 'TABLE TENNIS WERE VERY LESS POPULERED' and 'MARTIAL ARTS WERE'. Attempts at complex structures are faulty or missing altogether, and punctuation is inconsistent, with missing commas and erratic capitalization. Frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach the next level, the writer should incorporate a mix of complex sentence forms, ensure proper subject-verb agreement, and work on reducing basic grammatical inaccuracies.
