Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph depicts the number of participants for five different activities at one social center in Melbourne, Australia, from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, film club remained the most popular activity, while amature dramatics experienced a marked decline. In contrast, table tennis recorded the most substaintial growth, and musical instruments showed a steady upward trend after being introduced in 2005.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends across all five activities and selects key features to report, satisfying the core requirements of Task 1. The general patterns—such as the film club's dominance and table tennis's dramatic rise—are successfully identified and supported with data. However, the response stops short of a fully developed Band 7 performance because some data points contain minor inaccuracies when compared against the visual data, such as claiming that the film club participation rebounded to around 60 in 2020 (when it was actually 66) and misstating the starting figure for table tennis as 5 rather than 16. Furthermore, some trends are described with a tendency to overgeneralize or lack precise quantification, placing the response firmly at the lower half-band level where key details are visible but slightly flawed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout, allowing the reader to easily follow the comparison of activities over the twenty-year period. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction and overview from the body details, with each body paragraph focusing logically on different activities. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Although', 'Thereafter', and 'Meanwhile' are employed effectively to link ideas and signal shifts in time and trend. Reference words are handled well, ensuring that the relationships between subjects and figures remain clear. This strong structural framework comfortably meets the Band 7 requirements for coherence and logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'rebounded', 'plummeting', 'surged', and 'upward trend'. These choices show an awareness of style required for academic data reporting. However, there are a few notable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent the writing from achieving a higher band, including 'amature' instead of 'amateur' and 'substaintial' instead of 'substantial'. Additionally, some lexical collocations or descriptive verbs are slightly imprecise or repetitive, reflecting the characteristic features of a solid Band 6 performance while beginning to touch upon the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response exhibits a good variety of sentence structures, mixing simple forms with complex clauses using subordinating conjunctions like 'Although' and 'before falling'. There is a frequent presence of error-free sentences, and the control over verb tenses—particularly past simple tense for historical data—is generally sound. Minor errors do occur, such as the missing preposition in 'participated film club' (instead of 'participated in'), but these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The control over punctuation and grammar aligns well with the criteria for Band 7, showing good command over complex syntactic structures.
