Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph illustrates the number of people in Melbourne who was participated in five different types of activities between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the figure from film club was far higher than any other activities throughout the period. Amateur dramatics was the only activity, in which people lost their interest over the years.

The member of film club slightly decreased from 2000 to 2010, then again, the number start to increase and in final year it reached nearly 65, which was almost same as year 2000.In martial arts program the figure went through a up and down situation from 2000 to 2020 and finally remained in around 40, which was same as 2000.Participation in table tennis initially was below 20, but in 2005 it increased to 20 and stayed same until 2010. After that the figure dramatically rose to nearly 60 in 2020 and secured the second position in terms of the number of participations. Although people didn’t choose musical performances until 2005, they suddenly became interested and started to join after that and number gradually went up to near 15 in the end of the period.

In contrast, participation in the amateur dramatics massively decreased after 2005. Though in the first five years the figure increased slightly and reached nearly 30, but later it went down and ended up with 5 members approximately.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, selecting relevant data points, and making appropriate comparisons across the five activities. The overview clearly highlights the dominant position of the film club and the contrasting downward trend of amateur dramatics. Key features, such as the dramatic rise of table tennis and the emergence of musical performances after 2005, are accurately described. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or provide imprecise approximations in places, such as stating that martial arts 'remained in around 40' when the actual figure was closer to 36, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Nevertheless, the main trends and data are well supported throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to grouping the activities logically. Information flows reasonably well, and referencing is generally effective, such as using 'In contrast' to signal a shift to amateur dramatics. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty due to awkward transitions between sentences, such as 'then again, the number start to increase'. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the different categories of data, but the internal logical progression within sentences could be smoother to achieve a fully seamless flow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying trends with items such as 'dramatically rose', 'massively decreased', and 'gradually went up'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and word form errors that highlight limitations in lexical control, such as writing 'the member of film club' instead of 'the number of members', and 'participation in the amateur dramatics'. Furthermore, some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'went through a up and down situation'. While these inaccuracies do not impede communication, they reflect a restricted range of vocabulary control that prevents a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and conditional-style contrast structures. However, control over grammar and accuracy is inconsistent, with frequent errors occurring in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles. Examples include 'number of people in Melbourne who was participated' (incorrect passive/active tense blend), 'the number start to increase' (lack of subject-verb agreement), and missing articles before nouns like 'final year'. These frequent errors require some effort from the reader to parse, though meaning is generally preserved.
