Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graph illustrates the number of people in Melbourne who participated in five different types of activities between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the figure for the film club was far higher than any other activity throughout the period. Amateur dramatics was the only activity in which people lost their interest over the years.

The number of members in film club slightly decreased from 2000 to 2010, then the number started to increase and in the final year it reached nearly 65, which was almost the same as year 2000. In martial arts program the figure went through an up-and-down situation from 2000 to 2020 and finally remained at around 40, which was the same as 2000. Participation in table tennis initially was below 20, but in 2005 it increased to 20 and stayed the same until 2010. After that, the figure dramatically rose to nearly 60 in 2020 and secured the second position in terms of the number of participations. Although people didn’t choose musical performances until 2005, they suddenly became interested and started to join after that and the number gradually went up to near 15 in the end of the period.

In contrast, participation in the amateur dramatics massively decreased after 2005. In the first five years the figure increased slightly and reached nearly 30, but later it went down and ended up with 5 members approximately.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and key comparisons across the five activities shown in the graph. The overview clearly highlights the dominant position of the film club and the downward trajectory of amateur dramatics, which fulfills the requirement for an overview of overall trends. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the initial and final figures for table tennis and the peak of the film club. However, some ideas show a minor tendency to over-generalize or slightly misstate minor fluctuations, such as describing martial arts as remaining around forty when it hovered closer to thirty-five. Overall, the information is well selected and supported, placing the response solidly in the seven band range for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory summary to individual body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related data series together. Cohesive devices such as 'overall', 'in contrast', and 'after that' are employed to guide the reader through the data. Because some transitional referencing feels slightly mechanical and the paragraph structure could benefit from tighter integration of comparative data to reach the next band level, the performance reflects the characteristics of a half-band, meeting the lower standard fully while incorporating some elements of clearer logical organization.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'participated', 'dramatically rose', and 'massively decreased'. Word choice is generally clear, though there are occasional minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'lost their interest' instead of 'lost interest' or 'an up-and-down situation' instead of 'fluctuated'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate and do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision, use more sophisticated collocations, and avoid slightly unnatural phrasing when describing data trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers effectively. There is a good attempt at controlling verb tenses for past data, such as 'participated', 'decreased', and 'reached'. However, some grammatical errors and awkward article usage persist, such as 'in film club' instead of 'in the film club' and 'near 15' instead of 'near 15 participants'. These errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily. The control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is generally sound, supporting a steady flow of information throughout the text.
