Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table provides data about the proportion of participants for various activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.

Overall, Film club was the higher number of participants in each year, while musical performances made up the smallest segment in 2005. On the other hand martial arts represented the second-largest segment, whereas Amateur dramatics and table tennis nearly the second-lowest number of participants in 2005.

The film club represented around 65% in 2000 and in 2010 it was just over 60%, 70% in 2020. In contrast, the proportion of martial arts stood at one-third in 2000, it was moving still same range in 2020.

In 2000, amateur dramatics accounted for around a quarter, and it was still declined almost 5% in 2020. On the other hand, table constituted just below one-fifth in 2000, after rose to 50% in 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to address the task by reporting information from the line graph, but it suffers from several key weaknesses. Crucially, the response falls short of the minimum word count requirement of 150 words. Furthermore, the student misinterprets the nature of the data, repeatedly referring to 'proportions' and percentages rather than actual numbers of participants (e.g., stating 'represented around 65%' and 'rose to 50%'). While some main features are mentioned, such as the Film club having the highest participation, the selection of data is erratic and includes inaccurate figures and unsupported trends, such as stating that the film club reached 70% in 2020 or that table tennis rose to 50% in 2010.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has some basic organization with an introductory sentence and paragraph divisions, but there is a lack of clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the repetitive and inappropriate use of 'On the other hand' to link sentences that do not present true contrasts (e.g., 'On the other hand martial arts represented...'). Referencing is sometimes confusing, and the grouping of information into paragraphs lacks a clear, logical strategy for comparing the different activities over the twenty-year period.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some topic-related vocabulary like 'participants', 'segment', and 'proportion', but the misuse of 'proportion' and percentages throughout shows a weak understanding of the data type. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'table constituted' instead of 'table tennis constituted' and 'was moving still same range', which reflect a restricted vocabulary and cause some difficulty in comprehension for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammar demonstrates a limited range of structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are issues with basic verb forms, tenses, and missing elements, such as 'Film club was the higher number of participants' instead of 'had the highest number' and 'it was still declined' instead of 'it still declined'. Preposition and article errors are also present, such as 'in each year' and missing articles before activity names. Complex sentence attempts are frequently faulty, leading to distorted meanings.
