Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, providing an overview and selecting key data points to report, which places it securely at this level. You successfully identify the main trends for the various activities, such as the high popularity of the Film club and the significant growth in Table tennis. However, some ideas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies when compared to the visual data. For instance, stating that the Film club stood at around 70 participants in 2000 is slightly inflated (the actual figure is closer to 64), and describing Musical performances as starting from 2005 overlooks its zero start in 2000. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat simplistic, mentioning only extremes without capturing broader overarching movements. To reach a higher level, ensure greater precision when reporting data figures and develop your overview by synthesizing the most striking overall trends across the entire twenty-year period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically into paragraphs, moving from an introductory overview into body paragraphs categorized by activities. Progression is generally maintained through sequencing phrases such as 'Turning to the first category' and 'Furthermore'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical due to awkward transitions and run-on structures. For example, sentences like 'after that it slightly decrease and reached at 60 attendees in 2010 but in 2020 the number of paticipants rose' string multiple clauses together clumsily with coordinating conjunctions rather than appropriate subordination or punctuation. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in 'followed by it reached at 20 attendees'. To improve cohesion to a higher standard, you should vary your cohesive devices more naturally, avoid stringing clauses together with commas, and ensure that each sentence flows smoothly into the next without mechanical repetition of structural patterns.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the main features of the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common items such as 'fluctuation', 'gradually', and 'sharply'. However, the range is limited and there are several noticeable word choice, word form, and spelling errors that prevent a higher evaluation. For example, you wrote 'decrease' instead of the past tense 'decreased', 'paticipants' contains a spelling error, 'reaced' is misspelled for 'reached', and 'Marital arts' is used instead of 'Martial arts'. Additionally, collocation and preposition usage with verbs are occasionally imprecise, such as 'reached at' instead of simply 'reached'. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your vocabulary range, use precise academic verbs and nouns without preposition errors, and carefully proofread your work to eliminate basic spelling and word-form slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like subordinate clauses and compound-complex sentences to report the graph data. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, but they rarely impede communication. Errors include tense inconsistencies and awkward verb forms, such as 'after that it slightly decrease' (should be past tense) and 'then it grdually surge' (should be 'surged'). There are also missing articles and preposition issues within grammatical patterns, such as 'stood at just upper 20 participants' instead of 'just over'. To reach a higher band, you need to exercise better control over past tense verbs when describing historical data, ensure consistent agreement and verb forms across complex sentences, and refine your punctuation to avoid comma splices where independent clauses are incorrectly joined.
