Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response makes a basic attempt to address the prompt by identifying some features of the graph, such as mentioning the film club and table tennis. However, the attempt is extremely minimal and fails to present a clear, developed overview or a well-supported summary of the main trends. Many of the descriptions of data points are inaccurate, confused, or entirely missing key comparisons. The overview sentence is vague and does not properly reflect the overall trends shown in the graph. To move to a higher level, the response would need to outline the main trends clearly in an overview and accurately select and report key data without major misinterpretations of the figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The information and ideas are not arranged coherently. The text lacks a logical overall progression, and the division of paragraphs is erratic, with sentences awkwardly broken up (for example, starting a sentence with 'Overall.' followed by a fragment). Cohesive devices are used very poorly, often resulting in meaningless transitions like 'Abler a decat latal' or random conjunctions ('moreover', 'While') that fail to create clear logical links between sentences. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which activity or time period is being discussed. Improving this criterion requires structuring the response into a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, while using accurate and natural cohesive ties to sequence information.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
Vocabulary use is very basic and heavily flawed throughout the text. The writer attempts to use some less common words, but frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling (such as 'Melbourn', 'perid', 'margnal', 'aproxamaltly') severely strain the reader. Many terms are used inappropriately or non-idiomatically, such as 'combade' or 'tannis table'. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, learn the correct spellings of common task-related words, and ensure that word choices accurately reflect mathematical trends and data descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. Errors are extremely frequent and often distort the meaning, such as 'The line graph give details' (subject-verb agreement), 'film club was, slightly minimally increased decreased', and 'Musical performances was have no participants'. Punctuation and article usage are also highly problematic. To improve, the writer needs to focus on basic sentence construction, correct verb tense consistency, and mastering simple agreement rules to reduce the density of errors that impede communication.
