Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features of the chart. The opening statement properly paraphrases the prompt, and the overview captures the most striking trends, such as the sustained popularity of the film club and the dramatic rise in table tennis participation. Key data points are accurately reported, including figures for 2000 and 2020. However, the report shows a slight tendency to over-generalise or minor inaccuracies in data reporting toward the end of the text, such as mentioning that musical performances reached 15 when the graph shows around 18. Ideas are extended and supported well overall, earning a solid score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the report. Information is grouped sensibly into paragraphs, moving from an introductory overview to specific data comparisons across the timeline. Cohesive devices such as 'In 2000', 'At the same time', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data and establish clear relationships between the different activities. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose in developing the summary. While referencing and sequencing are handled well, a slightly more sophisticated integration of the musical performances data could elevate the cohesion further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data trends such as 'recovered', 'stable', 'increase sharply', and 'continue to decline'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some success, though there are occasional spelling and word-choice errors that reflect this band level, such as 'dra, matics', 'deopped', 'Muscial', and 'particiapnts'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher mark. Precision in word choice and careful proofreading for spelling would enhance the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writing exhibits a good variety of complex structures and a high proportion of error-free sentences. The student effectively utilises complex sentence forms and subordinate clauses, as seen in structures like 'The line graph shows the number of people who took part...' and 'while the number of participants in amateur dramatics fell considerably'. Control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong, with accurate verb tenses used to describe past data. While a few minor typographical or slip-of-the-pen errors occur, such as 'toi' instead of 'to', these do not interfere with understanding and demonstrate a firm grasp of grammatical control.
